One More Spin Before Dawn
Diane Hart

The diner clock reads 3 AM
The coffee's gone cold
Your fingers trace my trembling hand like a story left untold
That jukebox keeps on hummin' our same old melody
"Blue Moon" on cracked vinyl the last good dream we'll see
You swore you'd hate goodbyes, so you're leavin' without one
Just a bus ticket folded where your heart was supposed to run
But the neon still flickers like it's beggin' us to stay
So spin that record, darlin' let's pretend we're yesterday
One more spin before dawn steals you out that door
One slow whirl 'round these checkered floors
The draft board called your name, but tonight you're mine
Just a cherry coke, two straws and the hands that stop the time
That waitress wipes the counter like she's wipin' out our past
She's seen a thousand boys like you—none of 'em ever last
Your suitcase waits by the door where the dawn will steal you blind
But tonight you're just a boy with his lips pressed into mine
"Funny how a nickel's worth of music costs a lifetime to forget."
One more spin before dawn steals you out that door
One last taste of a love we can't afford. The clock ticks closer, and soon you'll walk
Away once more But for now
Let's dance like we're still allowed. "Don't let it end when the music fades."
